Understanding your skin barrier
Redness, tightness and sudden sensitivity often share one cause. Here is how to restore balance.

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin: cells held together by lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. When it is intact, skin feels calm and holds moisture well.
Signs it needs care
- Stinging when you apply products that once felt fine
- Persistent tightness after cleansing
- Flaking alongside oiliness
- Redness that comes and goes
How to restore it
Pause strong exfoliants and retinoids. Use a gentle cleanser, then layer hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol and centella. Finish with a ceramide-rich cream.
Most barriers recover within two to four weeks of consistent, gentle care. If irritation persists, consult a dermatologist.
